4 ways to prepare for the new school year
We’re halfway through the summer break, so it’s time to start thinking about the school year ahead. Hopefully, you have fun holiday plans still to come, but to help you and your students make 2017/18 the best school year possible, it’s good to prepare for what’s in store. The best way to do this is with our easy 4-step process.
1. Reflect on last year
As a wise man once said, “You can’t know where you’re headed until you know where you’ve been”. To help you prepare for the new school year ahead, you need to first look at how last year went. Take a few minutes to jot down some points like, what do you think went well in your class last year? What subjects did the students excel in? What subjects did they do badly in? By getting a rough written idea of what went well and what went bad, you can start to then build an idea of the things you would like to change next year.
2. Look ahead
Hopefully, step 1 was productive, so now it’s time to first start looking at the year ahead. You can start finding solutions to problems that you found in step one, by thinking of what you will do differently next year. For example, you may have found that last year the class struggled with creative writing or fell behind in English class. Well now you can realise it’s time to put greater focus on the time they spend reading, and creating and writing their own imaginative stories. Perhaps putting on a lunchtime booster session would be useful for some students.
3. Set goals
This is where your new plans start to come to life and you really make some changes. You now need to set goals for how you will achieve those plans. Following on from our example, maybe your first goal should be to encourage as many students as possible to read 1 new book every fortnight. You can make it fun by creating a board or personal diary where they can all track their progress, and get rewarded for hitting their goals.
4. Organise school supplies
The final step in getting you fully prepared for the new school year is to get your tools in place to help you achieve these new found plans. In this case, your tools are of course your school supplies. Nobody likes using old worn out notebooks, or half broken pens and pencils. Instead, sort out exactly what you will need for the year ahead and get stocked up now. Best of all, you can make use of these new found goals, by purchasing a brand new diary or notebook to write them down in and keep them with you at all times.
