5 Reasons to Save the Rhino
Rhinos have been known to be under threat from extinction for many years and here at Rhino Stationery, we work alongside the charity 'Save the Rhino International' to save endangered rhinos. So, why should we all be aiming to save the rhino? There are so many reasons but here are just five:
1. Critically endangered
Currently, there are around 24,000 rhinos in the wild as opposed to over a million at the beginning of the 19th century. In South Africa, one rhino is being killed every seven hours; an extremely alarming rate considering the few that still exist. There have been estimations that rhinos will become fully extinct in the next 20 years, so strategies need to be put in place to prevent this from occurring so soon.
2. Important part of the eco-system
The decline of the rhino means that other forms of wildlife will be impacted. Changes in the eco-system may occur, due to the fact that rhinos are an umbrella species and other mammals, plants and birds depend on them.
3. Been around for millions of years
What many people are unaware of, is that rhinos have been around for millions of years; 50 million to be exact. Selfish poachers have caused rhinos to become endangered quickly, to get their horns, to be used for Chinese medicines, as humans wishing to get their hands on such a high-profile item. Why should rhinos become endangered in the 21st century due to the selfishness of humans?
4. Attracting tourists
In the wild, those hoping to take a glimpse of rhinos are paying a great deal of money to get up close and personal with this amazing creature. Rhinos are a highly popular species which stimulates revenue for local communities and wildlife parks in the UK and abroad.
5. An opportunity to do our part
Many people are unaware that rhinos are actually endangered, therefore setting up charities brings communities together for a worthy cause. The more work that is done for the preservation of rhinos, the more people who will learn about the dark future of rhinos and how it can be prevented.
