Crafty ideas for Autumn lessons
Wondering how to excite your students with arts and crafts during the autumn months? Trying to engage with a new set of faces in the autumn term can be a learning curve for teachers, but arts and crafts are always a great way to explore topics, facilitate creativity and to start the academic year on a high. Read on for some top autumnal arts and crafts ideas for the classroom, including ways to link these with National Curriculum topics.
A Crafty Halloween
Halloween is the perfect time to get crafty, especially with KS1 children who engage well with this holiday. Monster puppets from socks can be done using basic materials. A class-wide spooky city landscape collage using a variety of textures is another ideal KS1 art project.
Trees and the Science Curriculum
The changing colour of leaves in Autumn may be its most defining feature, but this is also a great way to create art whilst exploring the KS2 science topic of 'Plant Life Cycles'. Take children outdoors equipped with large art pads during September to try and capture the changing trees. Alternatively, collect leaves of a variety of colours and scrapbook them as part of the KS1 Science Curriculum's 'Seasonal Changes' topic. You can also engage with the topic of 'Harvest' to create fruit and vegetable block prints.
Other Autumn craft sessions
Taking the science out of autumn and focussing purely on art, this is a great season to start looking at new ways of creating pictures. Introducing watercolour pencils is a great way to help children capture the natural changes that occur during autumn. Popular autumn craft sessions include creating hedgehogs from leaves, making an autumn class tree to attach photos and achievements or making some felt leaf bunting to decorate the new classroom.
