New Year lesson planning ideas to kick start learning
Although the academic year might run from September, the start of January is still very significant for many teachers. The children return to school refreshed and the teachers have had a chance to put their feet up, too. While it isn't the start of a new school year, it's still a significant term and can be a useful time to set the intention for the rest of the year. When you return to the classroom in 2018, try these fun activities to help set everyone on the right course for the year ahead.
Reflect on the previous year
Get those exercise books open and ask your children to remember the highlights (and lowlights) of the year that has passed. This can be focused solely on academic progression, or include things from the child's life outside of school. Ask your students to create a report or presentation on 2017 and share these with the whole class. This could be presented as a timeline, a storybook, or any other creative way you can imagine.
Make New Year's resolutions
Once you've reflected on the year passed, it's time to create some New Year's resolutions. This might include reading a certain number of books or making sure they always have the correct exercise books and school supplies. New Year's resolutions can include academic targets, but they should always focus on improving something rather than being the best at something. Setting personal targets is a great way to ensure every student starts the year feeling optimistic and capable. Turn their goals into bookmarks and laminate them so they can keep them close throughout the year.
Decide on classroom behaviour targets
After the students have decided on personal goals, bring everyone together to think about some classroom targets that you all want to achieve together. This helps students to look at how their behaviour can impact others. You might create a cloud of words that aren't allowed to be used in the classroom, or create a star chart to document progress. Create colourful displays with the classroom goals which can be referred to throughout the yea
Don't forget to set your own goals!
The start of a new year is a great time to think about your own lesson planning and make sure your classroom is well-stocked. Spend some time sorting through drawers and making a note of anything that needs to be replaced. You don't have to wait for the start of the academic year to stock up on school supplies. Make sure you never run out of exercise books, pens and pencils, or office supplies for your own desk, by placing an order today.
